Are bloggers nerds in disguise?

I was talking to a few cohorts yesterday and I mentioned reading something on a blog about a topic we were discussing. Here's the brunt of the conversation:

Other person "You blog?"

Me: "Yes, I actually have three blogs, a generic one that I share with some friends and others where I go on about life, politics, entertainment or just nothing at all, a political one where I'm totally anonymous, and a family one."

Other person: "I thought that was something nerds did when they didn't have any friends."

Me: "Well, maybe. But I've got a life, a job, friends, and blogs. Am I a nerd?"

Other person: "Uh. No. But...isn't that a little strange? Writing and putting your thoughts on the Internet for everyone to see? I mean, I've used chat rooms before..."

Me: "Wait a second. You've actually had online conversations with people you don't know? Isn't that a little strange? I thought that was something nerds did when they didn't have any friends."

Other person: "No, I just really couldn't figure out how to create a blog. I still don't understand why people would put up so much information about themselves on the Internet. Are we nerds?"

Me: "You might be. I'm just venting, and it's cheaper than therapy."

So what do you guys think, are we all strange manifestations of humanity?

No way! We're brave and imaginitive, and we're generous with our thoughts. We're not afrid to put ourselves out there. That's how I see it, anyway.

I'm paranoid, that's why I'm "anonymous", but I still blog! Mainly because you can say things blogging that you can't really say in public, or to your friends, or to your family.

I am so NOT a nerd. I am a writer and a blog enables me to wax poetic about anything I want.

No. We use blogging as an outlet.

We vent.

We share.

We keep in touch with friends we might otherwise lose connection with.

And we find other friends and witty folks we'd never find in this world without cyberspace

That's not nerdy. That's caring and community-oriented.

Lilred nailed it on the head. Because I am a nerd, I like to blog. But it isn't the blogging that makes me a nerd.

Thirty years of Star Trek? Now, that made me into a nerd.

Thanks for all the comments. I agree we're not nerds -- ok, maybe I am a little bit since I know every lyric to every old song in the world almost thanks to Lawrence Welk (that's another post for another day) --

It's just nice. As lilred said -- sharing is good for the soul.

Yes! Blogging is an outlet. I AM a nerd, but that's beside the point. Blogging has been my venue of choice for rediscovering my love of writing. And sorting out all the crap that whirls through my brain. But, yeah, what everyone else said!

And Oh! I thought I'd see what you had to say, and got a little laugh when I saw your template. This is the *exact* one that I butchered for my new look! :)

I don't think my trio are nerds at all! We're just verbal, social beings who enjoy keeping an online journal. I'm having great fun being a part of a blog. :)

I'm a nerd. And I blog.

How cathartic.

Plus, I want to hang out with Heather B. Armstrong.
